Grilled Pork Pizza with Peppers & Onions

There I stood with the refrigerator door open trying to decide what to make for dinner. I had an uncooked pork steak, an orange pepper, and a tube of wheat pizza dough I bought impulsively a few weeks ago.

So I decided to mimic one of those flatbread pizzas I like to order at a fancy restaurant on occasion. The sliced pepper and onion sautéed with a splash of soy sauce added depth and richness, while the wheat pizza dough was hearty and substantial – a delightful meal, indeed.

Recipe Type: Entree
Serves: 4-6 people
  • 1 (14 oz) can wheat pre-made pizza dough
  • 1 (4 -5 oz) bone-in pork steak
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 orange pepper, deseeded & thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp. soy sauce
  • 1 ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a small sheet pan with parchment paper and lighly coat with cooking spray.
  2. Unroll the pizza dough and place in the center of the sheet pan. Gently press along the edges to form a rectangle. Set aside.
  3. With the grill pan on a medium high flame, coat the pan with olive oil. Season both sides of the pork steak with salt and pepper. Grill the meat for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until cooked through. Transfer the meat to a plate and allow to rest under a sheet of foil.
  4. In a separate sauté pan over a medium flame, add two tablespoons of olive oil to the pan. Add the onions, peppers and soy sauce to the pan. Cook until the onions are tender and lightly golden, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the heat. Set aside.
  5. Bake the pizza dough in a 400-degree oven for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, remove the bone from the pork steak and slice thinly.
  6. Remove the par-baked dough from the oven. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with the minced garlic. Spread the steak, peppers and onions evenly across the top, leaving a small border along the outside edge. Top with the cheese.
  7. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 1-2 minutes before slicing and serving.
